Every one of
us have experienced headache at least once in our lifetime. It is bothersome,
nagging, and intrudes our daily activities. Whenever one suffers a headache,
advises regarding its cure, come flowing in from people around us. Most of them
claim that their treatment option is the best. But, we all should remember,
that all remedies are not for all.
Headache is
the pain which occurs in any region of the head. It can be of different intensities
and lasts for different durations. Based on the causes of headache, it can be of
two types:
1. Primary headache
Primary
headache is due to the stimulation of pain sensitive structures around the head
and includes the following types:
· Tension headache: A commonly occurring, mild-dull pain either
in the forehead or on both the sides of the head which can spread towards the
neck occasionally.
· Migraine: A throbbing or pulsating pain which usually
occurs on a single side of the head and can last for 4-72 hours. It
occasionally occurs with an aura and can worsen with activity.
· Cluster headache: One of the severe headaches which usually
occurs on one side of the head. It is episodic and starts suddenly. Each
episode can last for 1-3 months. The headache can peak within minutes and will
subside in an hour. The pain is very severe and can awaken the sufferer from
sleep. Unlike migraine, cluster headache can lead to agitation and
restlessness.
2. Secondary headache
Secondary
headache occurs due to any disease condition which irritates the pain sensitive
nerves of the head. These conditions can include: Dehydration, sinus headache,
blood clots in the brain, excess alcohol consumption, viral infections, etc.
There are
several reasons for headache which may include:
· Food sensitivities:
Foods such as aspartame, caffeine, chocolate, alcohol, cheese etc. can trigger
headache;
·
Low levels
of estrogen;
·
Extended
periods of bending over the desk;
·
Lack of
physical activity (however vigorous exercise can also lead to exertional
headache);
·
Certain
medications;
·
Eating and
sleeping patterns;
·
Noise or
glare;
·
Anxiety
The
diagnosis of the headache is based on the type of pain, pattern of attack,
duration and frequency. Complicated cases of headache need to be diagnosed with
brain scans.
